Males are black with small crest of erect hairs on top of head and no pale facial markings. Females yellowish to pale grey-brown, with contrasting dark belly, throat, face, cap, fingers and toes. Males have small throat pouch used to produce distinctive ‘boom’ call as part of song. Both sexes sing duets, female starting with accelerating series of notes, male ending with series of up and down notes. Found only in northern Vietnam, south Yunnan and Hainan Island in China.
